Annotations for Liquid State

Lyric: Warm my heart tonight
And hold my head up high
 And help me to survive
Annotation:
Whiskey or alcohol, has long been associated with warming one’s body when cold, literally cold. But the double meaning here is that it’s more often used to warm one’s feelings and numb some psychological pain, hence Warm my heart tonight. As well, holding one’s head up high implies being able to walk around without shame and acknowledging the deeper truth of alcoholism. It’s as though Wolstenholme is speaking of alcohol like it’s a friend inside who will help him through his pain; help him to survive. Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme who wrote the song about his struggles with alcoholism. Note the photo’s blurred effect.

Lyric: Warm my heart tonight
 (Force me to lose control)
And hold my head up high
(Watch as I lose my soul)
 And help me to survive
 (Push me until I fall)
Annotation:
Same meaning as the first chorus, but his voice seems a little more strained on the album version during this, the second chorus of the song, making it feel more emotional.

Lyric: Kick me when I’m down
Feed me poison, fill me till I drown
Wake me up before I get pushed out and fall into the night
Annotation:
This song is written to the instigators of his drinking, and is basically saying what his drinking was like. Also, “Fall into the night” could be a reference to how the more alcohol he consumes, the more he’ll lose track of time. So he wants to be woken up and brought back to his senses.
